Local history has been made this week with the very first COVID19 vaccination given within the Moorabool Shire.

Long-time Bacchus Marsh local Bill Cowan was the first cab off the rank on Wednesday, as Djerriwarrh Health rolled out its phase 1a program for staff as well as Grant Lodge residents.

Mr Cowan has been a resident at the aged care service for three years and his brother Graeme said the vaccine would bring some normality back to Bill’s life – as well as others at Grant Lodge.

Nurse Rachel McInnes had the honours on Wednesday and said it was an exciting moment.

“It means that our residents will soon be able to enjoy the things they love with their loved ones as we are now able to move closer to normalcy,” she said.

“After working and living through a pandemic as a nurse, it’s a sign of relief to see us moving that one step closer”.

DjHS Chief Executive Belinda Scott said the first vaccinations were a significant moment for Moorabool.

“The rollout of the COVID vaccine to our Grant Lodge residents and staff is a step towards a COVID normal future,” she said.

“It provides protection for our most vulnerable.”

As part of Western Health’s COVID vaccination Hub, the Pfizer vaccine will be delivered from Sunshine Hospital, with 22 residents receiving their vaccinations.

Western Health is one of three Melbourne metropolitan health services to manage a COVID vaccination hub.

It will work directly with other health services and private hospitals within the Western metro region to ensure vaccines are offered to high-risk, priority people as soon as available.

The organisations within this hub include the Royal Melbourne, Women’s, Royal Children’s, Peter Mac and Werribee Mercy hospitals.
