A motorcyclist has crashed into a barrier and died in an accident on the Western Freeway at Rockbank.

The 11.50am incident – on the Melbourne-side of the Leakes Rd interchange – has caused major traffic delays in the Ballarat-bound lanes.

Traffic was still banked up for several kilometres at 2pm

Several trucks have also stopped at the scene.

The motorcyclist is yet to be formally identified and was treated by first responders but sadly died at the scene.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined and police are speaking with a number of motorists who were in the vicinity of the scene at the time of the crash.
