The Farmgate Shop in Elaine has recently expanded to keep up with a growing customer base.

Simone and Mark Dunne recently added a second shipping container to their store, doubling its capacity.

Simone said they opened The Farmgate Shop five years ago as a roadside stall selling potatoes and then they bought a shipping container to stock and sell their meat.

“Our inspiration was to make a living from our farm,” she said.

“Our goal was to sell all our premium quality lamb through our shop and not through markets and within six months we were selling out.”

The Farmgate Shop now stocks a diverse array of locally produced goods such as premium lamb, beef, pork, venison, flour, milk, cheese, icecream, eggs, vegetables, olive oil, homemade pickles and sauces, soaps and essential oils from up to 20 local producers.

“Producers saw what we were doing and approached us,” Simone said.

“About 80 per cent of our products are still grown and produced locally, but we do stock some products from neighbouring regions if we can’t source it locally.

“It’s a really nice feeling to be able to support other producers.”

She said The Farmgate Shop was ideally situated between Ballarat and Geelong:

“Lots of our regulars are locals and over the weekend we’ll get lots of day trippers on the way to and from the beach.”

When the pandemic hit, Simone said life became busier because customers began ordering their meat and other products in bulk.

“We had a higher volume of customers and some of our suppliers couldn’t move products through their other outlets like the markets, so we were able to help move their stock through our shop and keep up with demand,” she said.
