A 46-year-old man has been flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries after his car collided with a truck west of Ballarat at dawn today (Monday).

The accident happened on Remembrance Drive, Cardigan at 5.20am.

Paramedics said the man was trapped for some time and he was treated for upper and lower body injuries.

The driver of the truck, a 67-year-old man, was taken to Ballarat Health Services in a serious condition with multiple injuries.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and it remains ongoing.
