Melton Council has welcomed Amazon Australia’s plans to open a second Victorian ‘fulfilment centre’ in late 2021 – creating 200 jobs during construction and 300 when finished.
The 37,000 sq m warehouse is being built in Ravenhall and will more than double Amazon’s operational footprint in the state.
The Palm Springs Rd address is reportedly expected to store around 6 million items.
“Amazon’s decision to base its new fulfilment centre in the City of Melton makes great business sense and is a massive win for local jobs growth,” Council Chief Executive Kelvin Tori said.
“To have an industry leader and major employer like Amazon invest locally demonstrates the outstanding opportunities our city’s prime location and highly skilled workforce provides.
“We offer links to major transport routes by rail, sea and air, and a diverse and growing workforce of degree-qualified professionals, trade professionals and young job seekers.
“As one of Australia’s fastest growing cities, it’s investment like this that will strengthen our economy and help ensure more local families can find work close to home.”
Amazon Australia Operations Director Craig Fuller said the centre would a create safe and reliable jobs when they were most needed.
“We’re proud to have played a unique role in supporting our Victorian customers during this unprecedented time, helping them to get the items they need for their families without leaving their homes,” he said.
“We’re committed to improving selection and delivery speed as demand continues to grow.
“On top of that we’re dedicated to enriching and giving back to the communities in which we operate and we look forward to working with Melton City Council, surrounding schools and local community groups to create community programs that will make an impact.”
Amazon will be a high-profile tenant of the Dexus’ Horizon 3023 estate, close to the Western Highway and walking distance from Caroline Springs railway station.
The deal comes after Amazon rented its first Australian warehouse at Dandenong in 2017.
