Police are investigating a suspicious car fire in a difficult-to-access creek area off Abey Rd, Melton South.

The first calls to emergency services came in at 5.29pm, with witnesses reporting the sound of explosions coming from the Toolern Creek.

Melton CFA and FRV arrived within four minutes with a rescue vehicle and pumper to find the car fully alight, but were unable to get close to the blaze.

A Melton tanker later gained access via a paddock and firefighters were able to prevent the fire spreading into nearby vegetation.

The fire was under control within 10 minutes.
