Police have spent much of the day checking the identity and addresses of customers outside the Coles store in the Bacchus Marsh Village shopping centre.
The officers – working as a pair – are believed to be from outside Bacchus Marsh and working as part of Operation Sentinel.
Metropolitan Coles stores are subject to a list of product limits, while regional stores – including Bacchus Marsh – are not.
A spokesperson for Coles Australia they had not requested a police presence, and had no control over ID checks outside the supermarket.
Reports have also filtered in of people caught without photo ID. One woman said she used a utility bill to prove where she lived. Another customer came to the store by bus and was not carrying a drivers licence.
## Meanwhile Coles Chief Executive Steven Cain said extra cleaning was being carried out in high-contact areas including trolley handles, baskets, checkouts, self-serve areas and pin-pads. Perspex screens have also been installed at checkouts.
“We ask all customers not to enter a store if they are unwell, to wash hands before going shopping and to make use of the sanitiser station located at the front of every store, “ he said.
“We would also encourage you to use our Coles product-finder app.
“Please continue to treat our team members with respect and only purchase the products you need.”
