The Central Highlands Football Netball League has voted to abandon senior footy in 2020, following the lead of the Ballarat, Maryborough-Castlemaine and AFL Goldfields Women’s leagues this week.

With 17 clubs, the CHFL is one of the largest leagues in Victoria – and five are based in the Moorabool Shire.

The board of management released a statement late Friday saying only five clubs were willing to commit to a 2020 season: Bungaree, Creswick, Hepburn, Learmonth and Waubra.

But the CHFNL says a junior competition may be possible, after several teams said they were willing to allow under-18s, 15s and 12s to play – including Bungaree.

Springbank juniors are also likely to play on – but only in the under-18 and under-15 divisions.

The shortened junior CHFNL fixture is expected to be announced by Monday.
