New lights have been installed at recreation reserves in the western half Moorabool Shire, allowing players to train in better conditions when COVID19 restrictions ease.

Four 30m high towers each have been installed at Gordon (pictured), Dunnstown, Bungaree and Wallace.

Moorabool Council has upgraded the lighting at Dunnstown and Bungaree to 150 lux, while Gordon and Wallace have been given 100 lux. Normal sunlight measures more than 100,000 lux.

“The grounds are predominantly used by the football clubs in winter and cricket clubs in summer, and the players at these clubs had been training at nights under pretty poor lighting conditions,” West Moorabool councillor Tom Sullivan said.

“The lighting levels were non-uniform across the playing surfaces which impacted on player safety, and the ground had deteriorated on the adequately-lit parts of the ovals.

“These new light towers will light up the whole oval, providing a safer and bigger space.”

Woodlands ward councillor Lawry Borgelt said clubs would now be able to use the grounds for longer hours into the evening.

“One of the drawbacks of having a poorly lit oval was it limited the time players could train on it,” he said.

The towers will be aimed, tested and commissioned in the next few weeks and be ready for use by late June.

The Dunnstown and Bungaree Football/netball clubs put in major funding to get brighter lights, while other funds came from Council and the State Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme.
