A bizarre white-and-yellow fireball has broken up over southern Australia tonight (Friday) with reports it was sighted as far afield as northern Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

We have reports it was seen in Castlemaine and Daylesford just after 6pm.

The bizarre incident understood to be Russian space junk burning up in the atmosphere.

Experts believe it was at least 20km above the earth’s surface when it vanished from view.

Victorians were unsure what to make of it, with many calling emergency services.
